If you're one of the horrorcore rap enthusiasts I'm speaking about in this title, then you're probably a bit confused right now. "Why is he pairing the words ICP and Clown Love? I've never heard ICP and Clown Love paired in Insane Clown Posse lyrics before", you think to yourself.
Here, ICP's clown love is referring to the group's obsession with clowns. Did you ever stop and ask yourself why the horrorcore rappers might have changed their name from Inner City Posse to Insane Clown Posse way back in the early 90s? I'll give you a hint: ICP's love for clowns and circuses isn't the answer.
Actually, legend has it that this switch stemmed from a dream that Violent J had one night, in which he saw a clown running around Delray, the Detroit neighborhood that spawned ICP. It had been agreed that the group would retain the ICP initials, so Insane Clown Posse fit perfectly, for the sake of ICP clown love or not.
But the name wasn't enough. Why include the word clown in your name and stop there? When ICP stood for Inner City Posse, they'd had a hype man with clown face paint that their crowds responded quite well to, and figured they might as well throw it on their own faces too.
Of course, most bands earlier in history that decided do don face paint were in the rock genre, not the horrorcore rap genre. This unique trait certainly added to the band's appeal, whether fans were weary of this new ICP clown love or not.
So there's that. But why would horrorcore rap enthusiasts gravitate to this kind of thing? It doesn't take a musical expert to tell you that ICP's clown love themes don't historically resonate with the horrorcore rap audience. The most convincing reason to this rhyme is that it's not really about the ICP clown love at allit's about the Insane Clown Posse lyrics.
Of course, maniacal clowns are scary to an extent, and if horrorcore rap enthusiasts wish to be a little skeeved out at concerts or by listening to horrorcore rap, then ICP's clown love marketing theme is the perfect answer. However, Insane Clown Posse's lyrics are really what creates the strong bond between horrorcore rappers and horrorcore rap enthusiasts, because Insane Clown Posse lyrics are often times literally insane.
Insane Clown Posse lyrics do not touch on carnivals and clowns, at least not those carnivals and clowns most of us are used to. Some Insane Clown Posse lyrics and albums circle around those themes on a sinister level, but most go beyond that and talk about traditional horrorcore rap themes like the supernatural, the afterlife, murder and suicide, and of course plenty of gore. Insane Clown Posse lyrics often touch upon heartbreak from women as well. If you wanted to get technical about it, this might be the closest ICP's clown love gets to Insane Clown Posse lyrics!
