In the simplest terms, a guitar tab is a word that is used to describe a musical notation, which may contain either numbers or letters and explains to the musician where to place his/her fingers on the instrument. Also, guitar tabs have multiple lines often called staff notation. These lines, which are present in guitar tabs, each represent one of the guitar strings.
New musicians often find guitar tabs to be especially baffling in that the strings are written backwards. Since most people expected guitar tabs to be written from top to bottom, the highest string found at the top of the guitar tab is difficult to learn. In actuality, guitar tabs are written from the highest to lowest and the numbers on each line represent the guitar fret. For new guitarists, in order to understand guitar tabs, they must first learn string placement and read frets correctly.
Generally written in standard format, guitar tabs may slightly vary depending on the sheet music publisher. Even still, guitar tabs are easier to read than learning staff notation. Because of it's visual representation, new musicians are often more comfortable reading guitar tabs than any other kind of music.
Learning the guitar will make musicians more familiar with the instrument and how it works. Private instruction and informational reference videos and books can be options for those who want to accomplish this. Another option would be classroom lessons where musicians can be better equipped in learning guitar and how to read guitar tables. Once musicians become familiar with the terms used to describe a guitar including chord, neck, string, etc., they can easily begin to read guitar tabs.
Guitar tabs can be intimidating in the beginning. Also confusing are all those multiple lines, numbers, letters, and other symbols. As the links found your favorite website, guitar tabs will be easier to understand with time and practice. Reading guitar tabs is the first step because few musicians can play by ear without first learning a song via sheet music.
You can check the local yellow pages or ask the music director in your college or high school for recommendation if you need further information on finding a guitar instructor.
