David Bowie has achieved something that only a few artists in the modern charts will ever hope to accomplish, and which is to stay popular for four decades. That is more than can be said for the musical acts that grace the radio today, and you can almost bet that many of them won't be around in five years never mind 40 years from now. When you think of David Bowie, you don't often imagine humorous lyrics as part of his repertoire, but that is exactly what you get with one of his earliest tracks. David Bowie lyrics tend to be very artistic and full of amazing imagery, but the lyrics to his hit The Laughing Gnome are a pretty big removal from that style. The song tells the story of a man who runs into a little gnome whilst walking up the high street one day. He takes the gnome home for a cup of tea and a bite to eat. The song features Bowie's signature vocal styling, but also includes the squeaky voice and giggles of the laughing gnome. The music was mostly ignored when it was released in 1969, but eventually became a hit in 1973 when Bowie had finally become a huge part of the growing British music scene.
