ICP merchandise exists in all shapes and sizes. It exists in all sorts of places, too. Furthermore, ICP merchandise is not strictly limited to material that only promotes the band ICP. ICP merchandise also promotes the band's record label, Psychopathic Records, and sometimes, even other horror rap acts that happen to ever go on tour or play a show with the horror rap juggernauts. None of this is a mistake.
Let's start with product diversity. Hatchet gear promoting both Psychopathic Records and ICP is all sorts of colors, sizes, and meant for both sexes. You never would have thought 20 years ago that the smallest Juggalette could find some feminine ICP merchandise to promote her favorite record label, Psychopathic Records.
In the Hatchet Gear online store today, not only does this type of ICP merchandise exist, but it's incredibly easy to find. Violent J and 2 Dope don't worry too much about supply and demand. They know that their Juggalette tanks won't be as popular as a big ICP T, but that doesn't stop them from creating them so everyone can join in on the hatchet gear fun.
This brings up another point. Even though hatchet gear's website is the number one destination for ICP merchandise online, it is not the only place hatchet gear is sold. You better believe that any time a Psychopathic Records artist plays a show, either on tour or just as a one off in their hometown, there is a plethora of Psychopathic Records swag and Hatchet Gear ready to greet them.
So now we've got product diversity and location covered, but it's not as simple as building it so they come. ICP merchandise still has to be desirable enough for Juggalos to spend their hard earned money on buying it. That's why you will never find hatchet gear that's dull or unoriginal.
Just by browsing through the hatchet gear website, one can find merchandise for every Psychopathic Records artist, and good merchandise at that. Good merchandise, and lots of it. Even Anybody Killa, one of Psychopathic Records' lesser-known horror rap artists, has 31 t-shirts available on the hatchet gear site.
Of course that number doesn't hold a candle to the 133 t-shirts in the ICP merchandise section, but it still goes to show that location, quality, diversity and quantity remain four of the most important elements to take into consideration when plotting out your band's merchandise line.
Once those basics are covered, the cherry on top is what ICP merchandise is known for: merchandise from left field.
Seriously, how many other bands that have taken their merchandise to the levels that J and Dope have taken ICP merchandise to? You can find ICP keychains, flags, posters, and as of late, you can even buy an ICP energy drink. Psychopathic Records would be extremely fortunate some day if all of the bands on their roster had the money to diversify their hatchet gear merch offering this way.
Either way, as you now see, the strategy behind ICP's expertise in merchandise can be boiled down to four main principles.
