Grunge music smashed through to the mainstream when Nirvana released the album Nevermind in 1991. After that hell broke loose and many grunge bands hit the popular music charts along with air time on the radio stations. The majority of the groups were from the Seattle area and grunge is often called grunge from Seattle.
Grunge can be described as a mix of heavy metal and punk rock however differs from both of the styles with slow tempo riffs and harmonies. Grunge was way more than just the music. Lots of grunge band members were recognized for their ungroomed looks and they didn't present them selves as rock stars, like for example the members of Guns and Roses or Bon Jovi.
What was quite interesting with the grunge phenomenon had to be the dark and sometimes depressing lyrics. Very few people give thought to what the songs they listen to are actually about. A number of them would be surprised if they knew what the grunge songs were actually about.
The song Nuthell sums this up pretty much. Nutshell lyrics by Layne Staley the lead singer of Alice In Chains is an ideal example of dark lyrics that are packed with angst and despair. A number of songs from the grunge bands were about drug abuse, child abuse, rape victims and things of that nature.
What's surprising is the u-turn from the late 80's.
Beasty Boys sang about that you had to fight for your right to party, Motley Crue sang about Girls, Girls, Girls, Van Halen sang about jumping and Def Leppard sang about pouring sugar over people.
One of the reasons grunge rock got popular in early 90's was that the younger generation didn´t connect with the music style of the late 80's.
One might ask if we are seeing an end of an era. Is the younger generation connecting with the best-selling music these days? You could make the claim there does exist too much of manufactured music on the market.
Could be a brand-new grunge wave coming?
